Taj Mahal truly deserves a position among the Seven Wonders of the World. This ivory-white marble mausoleum is located in Agra, Uttar Pradesh. Its construction started in 1632 by the Mughal emperor, Shah Jahan who wanted to dedicate a masterpiece to his favorite wife, Mumtaz Mahal. The construction was completed in 1653 AD. Over 20,000 workers from India and Central Asia worked on the Taj. Specialists were pulled in from Europe to work on delicate marble screens and marble inlay work. Thousands of precious and semiprecious gemstones were used which added beauty and grace to this white marvel.
Taj Mahal sprawls over 17-hectare land housing a mosque, a guest house and surrounding gardens. The Taj earned the title of World Heritage Site in 1983. It is undoubtedly the greatest miracle of Indo-Islamic architecture. The main structure is inspired from design traditions of Persian and earlier Mughal architecture. The tomb in the center is a grand marble structure standing with pride on a square platform. The bottom of Taj Mahal is a large multi-chambered cube beautified with chamfered corners. As Muslim tradition does not follow elaborate decoration of graves, the bodies of Mumtaz and Shah Jahan were kept in simple crypt under the inner chamber with their faces facing Mecca. Taj Mahal is nestling with a large 300-metre charbagh adorned with flowerbeds. Visiting Taj Mahal is a lifetime experience that instantly makes you fall in love with this white beauty.
