Soaked into history, Jhansi lies in the state of Uttar Pradesh. Called the Gateway to Bundelkhand, the city was once ruled by the Marathas and is known for the legendary Indian revolutionary Rani Lakshmi Bai, a Maratha queen.
Jhansi houses some of the most splendid palaces and forts belonging to the bygone era. Visit the splendid Jhansi Fort located atop a hill overlooking the city. It was home to the Chandela Kings from the 11th to the 17th centuries. The granite walls of the fort looks grand and numerous mounted cannons can be seen here. It features 10 massive gates, including Khanderao Gate, Datia Darwaza, Laxmi Gate, Sagar Gate, Orchha Gate, Unnao Gate, Jharna Gate, Sainyar Gate and Chand Gate. There are also Shiva temple and Ganesh temple at the entrance. The Rani Mahal in the fort, which is now an archeological museum, looks extremely beautiful. This was the Palace of Rani Laxmi Bai. Jhasi Fort plays host to the annual Jhansi Mahotsav where numerous eminent personalities and artists come together to perform.
Also, visit the Government Museum of Jhansi which was built in 1878. You can find some of the rarest archeological gems here, including paintings, weapons, manuscripts, etc.
