One of the most significant Buddhist pilgrimage sites in India, Bodhgaya is located in Gaya district of Bihar. The place is known as Gautama Buddha attained enlightenment here under the Bodhi Tree. Bodhgaya is one of the four major Buddhist pilgrimage sites, the other three being Kushinagar, Lumbini, and Sarnath.

Every year thousands of pilgrims visit this UNESCO World Heritage Site to attain Nirvana. The Mahabodhi Temple is the most renowned Buddhist shrine of Bodhgaya. This temple was raised by Ashoka in the third century. Its extensive ground and main shrine painted in gold make many jaws drop. Its complex also houses the Bodhi tree which basically grew from a sapling of the Sri Maha Bodhi tree in Sri Lanka. Also, the Great Buddha Statue situated right next to the temple catches the attention of every visitor with its larger than life structure rising to a height of 25 meters. It is the largest and oldest Buddha statue built in India. The statue was unveiled in 1989 by His Holiness Dalai Lama. It is nestling with 10 smaller sculptures of Buddha’s disciples which look beautiful. To delve into the history of this place, visit the Archaeological Society of India Museum. The museum beautifully depicts the life of Gautam Buddha through displays like Buddha preaching and his ideals. Also, of all the monasteries in Bodh Gaya Thai monastery stands out with its incredible looking architecture and sloping roof with golden tiles. The monastery houses a bronze statue of Buddha with rises to a height of 25 meters. The serenity around this monastery is amazing and offers you a perfect backdrop to meditate.
