For the devotees of Lord Shiva, Amarnath is the most important pilgrimage located in Jammu and Kashmir state of India. The Amarnath cave here is visited by lakhs of pilgrims every year to see the enshrined image of ice called the Shivaling. This journey to an altitude of 3,888 m is extremely difficult and remains open only during summer months. The cave is around 5000 years old. It is believed that this is the place where Lord Shiva explained the secrets of life and eternity to his wife Goddess Parvati. There are two more ice formations in the cave representing Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva's son Lord Ganesh. The ice linga of Lord Shiva holds a great importance in the Hindu religion. It is believed that this linga expands during the waxing moon and shrinks as it wanes. On the first day of the Shravan month thousands of devotees flock at this cave as it is said that Lord Shiva visits here on this day.
The journey to the Amarnath cave completes in five days on foot from either Srinagar or Pahalgam.
